Is it OK for MPs to do something different – like Johnny Mercer – to pay the bills?

The Tory MP Johnny Mercer has surprised his constituents by appearing half-naked and covered in lather in an advert for Dove Men+Care. The former army captain shot the 15-second video in February last year, as a way of raising extra cash for his campaign, after Dove sought out ex-servicemen rather than professional models to front a series of online ads.

The video, currently airing in the US, surfaced in Mercer’s local paper, and has now been seen widely in Westminster, prompting some disparaging comments. One fellow Conservative politician lamented it as evidence that the Commons has acquired “another Nadine Dorries type”; another suggested the video would make it difficult to take Mercer seriously.

But in the age of the career politician, is it refreshing to find one who’s done something a bit different to pay the bills? And what other jobs would you like to see politicians dabble in before reaching parliament? Let us know in the comments below.
