Is it illegal to sunbathe in your garden naked? This is what the law says

Scorching temperatures may tempt some ‘sun Gods’ to catch the rays as nature intended.

More carefree individuals will be tempted to sunbathe naked in the comfort of their own gardens to avoid the dreaded tan lines.

But is shedding layers within your own garden safe to do so, or do you run the risk of getting into trouble?

It turns out, you're perfectly fine to sunbathe in the nude in your garden - as long as it doesn't upset your neighbours.

While it is not against the law to be naked in public, it can become a criminal offence if being naked causes distress or alarm to others.

Temperatures in the North East and across the UK have soared over the past few days.

Our sister title The Bristol Post asked Avon and Somerset Police for the official line of garden sunbathing - and this is what they had to say.

“Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, it is not an offence for a person to appear naked in public but it becomes an offence if it can be proved that the person stripped off with the intention to cause distress, alarm or outrage.”

Aspiring ‘sun Gods’ may be advised to play it safe if their garden is overlooked by other properties and they are unclear how tolerant their neighbours may be.
