Is it illegal to drive in flip flops or bare foot?

With the weather hotting up plenty of us will be dressing for comfort, and when it comes to keeping your feet cool flip flops or sandals are often the best footwear.

But are they safe to drive in, and are you breaking the law if you do?

It seems many people are unsure of the rules, and it is not surprising as it is more of a grey area than you might think.

In short it is not against the law to drive in flip flops, but it is not safe either.

And the same applies whe driving bare foot. While not against the law, the Driving Standards Agency says it is important to wear appropriate shoes while driving, to make sure you have enough control and braking force.

The DSA describes suitable shoes as having a sole no thicker than 10mm, which is not too thin or too soft, provides enough grip on the pedals, not too heavy, not limit ankle movement and be narrow enough to stop you from accidentally pressing two pedals at once.

This also means wellies, high heels, and walking boots are not recommended driving footwear either.

It means by wearing flip flops - or going bare foot - while driving you are putting yourself and other drivers at risk.

So maybe it's better to sling a more appropriate pair of shoes in the car for when you take the wheel.
