Is it going to snow? Forecasts hint at early winter chill

London has experienced snowfall in previous years, including January 2024. - (PA)

Some of the first signs of winter may nearly be upon us, with some areas of the UK bracing for a colder weather front and perhaps even a sprinkling of snow in the coming weeks.

Weather forecasters have revealed that atmospheric temperatures in parts of the UK may drop below freezing later this month, signalling the start of a much cooler period for the nation.

Although daytime temperatures will remain manageable, especially in the capital, it appears that the UK is heading toward more unsettled weather patterns as we approach Halloween.

According to WX Charts, this changing temperature may lead to a few centimetres of snow falling in the northernmost parts of the UK.

Here’s what you need to know.

Is it going to snow?

Colder weather is coming, as expected for this time of the year. For the most part, the Met Office says this means we’re looking at “wetter and unsettled” conditions, so it’s best to have a brolly at hand.

London had its first snow at the end of November in 2024 when an unexpected flurry of snow temporarily blanketed the capital. But looking ahead this year, it’s unlikely that we’ll be making snowmen just yet in 2025.

Predictions indicate that atmospheric temperatures will drop below zero across the UK; however, it’s worth noting that this refers to air temperature at high altitudes rather than on the ground.

Contrary to some reports, WX Charts indicates that ground temperatures won’t drop below zero for the majority of the country.

But for the few people who live in the remote Scottish Highlands, it might be a different story.

According to the same weather platform, there may be around 3cm of snow falling between Inverness and Fort William on or around October 22 before quickly melting away again.

As for the rest of us, there’s no official sign of snow so far, but maybe it’s about time we start dusting off our winter jackets.

London weather forecast

While it may start to feel a bit colder around this time of year, the Met Office has stated that temperatures, particularly in the capital, are roughly normal for this time of year.

This week, London can expect daytime highs of around 18 degrees and overnight lows of around 11 degrees.

However, that may soon change.

Although it’s sometimes tricky to confirm long-range forecasts, and things can be pretty unpredictable, it looks like London will be set for low pressure and a lot of rain in the coming weeks.

According to the official long-range forecast for late October and early November, London is set to see “changeable conditions” including “showers or longer spells of rain.”
