Is it Eid today? Significance of the moon sighting and what it means for Muslims

Ramadan has come to an end, and Muslims around the world will be celebrating Eid al-Fitr today .

One of the most important days in the Islamic calendar, Eid is a time for family, friends and celebration.

It sees people come together to pray, and tuck into a feast after a month of fasting between sunrise and sunset.

This year, Ramadan began on 5 May and ended on 4 June.

Eid, which is held on the first day of the month of Shawwal, can only begin after the crescent moon has been sighted.

If weather conditions are poor and the moon is not seen on the 29th day of Ramadan, then Eid is pushed back.

This means that there can be discrepancies in when Eid al-Fitr is celebrated around the world.

Is today Eid?

The moon was sighted from Mecca in Saudi Arabia on Monday 3 June, which means that Ramadan has ended, and Eid al-Fitr celebrations can take place today.

Many Muslims around the world will attend prayers, and then celebrate with their friends and families.

Some Muslim communities, however, do not follow the moon sightings at Mecca. If the moon was not visible from their locality yesterday, they may wait until tomorrow (Wednesday 5 June) to begin the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
