Is it acceptable to ban children from a wedding to save money?

Every week a Guardian Money reader submits a question, and it’s up to you to help him or her out – a selection of the best answers will appear in next Saturday’s paper.

This week’s question:

A friend has issued her wedding invitation saying “no children” to save on costs. We have two – aged five and nine – and my husband is furious. He reckons we either don’t go, or send them a bill for childcare if we do. Is a ban on kids really acceptable?
