Is Innocent a true story? ITV drama back for a second series as Katherine Kelly leads cast

There is drama aplenty this week as, just as BBC launch a new one, Innocent returns to ITV.

First on the channel in 2018, Innocent series 1 was focused on the character of David Collins, who was wrongly jailed for the murder of his wife Tara.

After being released from jail on a technicality, David was intent on clearing his name and finding the real killer which, in a shocking turn of events, ended up being his own brother Phil.

Katherine Kelly leads the Innocent series 2 cast as the drama kicks off once again on Monday night, with the former Coronation Street star playing the main role of Sally Wright in a completely new story, with no connection to series 1.

But, one thing both series have in common is the fact they AREN'T based on real live events, although writer Chris Lang is happy to admit a police officer is on hand to fire questions at and take advice from to make sure that the plot is as realistic is possible.

The second run of Innocent focuses on the fictional scandal that shakes the Lake District town of Keswick involving schoolteacher, Sally who was alleged to be having an affair with her 16-year-old pupil, Matty Taylor.

Matty was stabbed to death with a cider bottle with Sally convicted of his murder and sentenced to a minimum 15 year stretch behind bars.

The first episode opens with Sally in the dock determined to clear her name, and repair her marriage, career and reputation after new evidence emerges in her favour.

The new findings mean that the person actually responsible for Matty's death is still at large with Sally and DCI Michael Braithwaite determined to track them down and bring them to justice.
