Is Heathrow in Ulez? All you need to know before driving to the airport

The controversial expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, known as Ulez, has meant that a high number of new locations have been added to the zone to reduce air pollution in the capital.

To enter the areas that are a part of Ulez with a vehicle that doesn’t meet the emission standard set out by Transport for London (TfL), drivers will need to pay a daily charge, except on Christmas Day.

But is Heathrow Airport now a part of this zone? And, if so, what are the things drivers need to be aware of?

Here is everything you need to know.

Is Heathrow Airport now in Ulez?

Yes, Heathrow Airport is due to be a part of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone from August 29, 2023.

This means that all vehicles entering the airport either have to meet the emission standards or be prepared to pay a non-compliance charge of about £12.50. This charge will be an additional charge on top of the other fees you may have to pay to enter the airport.

How to check what areas Ulez covers

It’s very straightforward to find which areas are included in Ulez. All you need to do is head to the TfL webpage about Ulez and select the “Where and When” option.

Then, you can either undertake a postcode search or look at the Ulez via the map.

How to find out if your vehicle meets Ulez standards

To check if your vehicle meets TfL’s emission standards, you can use the online TfL tool.

It will ask you to enter your vehicle’s number plate and its country of registration before it tells you more about your vehicle’s emission information.

Alternative ways to get to Heathrow Airport

If your car doesn’t meet the emission standards and you want to avoid the extra charge, you can always travel to the airport via alternative methods.

Heathrow Express runs regular trains from London Paddington. Plus, the Elizabeth Line and the Piccadilly Line will both get you to the airport smoothly, too.

You can also get to the airport via bus and coach. The airport is served by numerous local buses that operate throughout the day.

Lastly, you can hire a taxi or minicab — but the charge will be incorporated into the fare.
