Is Friends leaving Netflix? Streaming giant reassure fans that sitcom is staying

Netflix has allayed fears that Friends is being taken off the site after reports suggested it was being axed in the US.

Fans were left worried the popular sitcom, which follows a New York based set of close friends, was leaving the streaming service on January 1 after subscribers noticed an end date on the programme’s detail page.

However, Netflix has assured fans in the UK that the show is not disappearing in 2019, making a funny reference to the episode naming pattern to reveal the happy news.

Quote tweeting a worried fan, they wrote: “The One Where Friends is Going Nowhere, Don't Worry.”

Users immediately breathed a sigh of relief at the post, commenting how happy they were to have official confirmation.

Rumours began to swirl that Friends was being removed from the website after many US users’ tweeted screenshots of an “available until” date showing on their apps.

Stars: The popular sitcom ran from 1994 until 2004 (Warner Bros)

After four years on the platform, it was claimed Friends has reached the end of its digital stay on Netflix and is likely to be moved to AT&T’s brand new Warner Media streaming service, set to launch next year.

However, a chief content executive for Netflix told The Hollywood Reporter that the departure was "just a rumour". The "available until" date has also reportedly now disappeared.

Last week, the company announced their plans to launch their own service featuring shows from Warner Bros, Turner and HBO.

Friends, a Warner Bros project, ran from 1994 until 2004. It starred Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry as leads.

All 10 seasons of Friends are available on Netflix.
