Is Dublin Murders based on a true story? All you need to know about new RTE and BBC crime drama

RTE and BBC viewers have been gripped to the new crime thriller Dublin Murders aired this week.

The first two episodes of the new crime thriller series were played on BBC One over two nights - and Irish viewers got the first pair of episodes combined on their screens on Wednesday night.

There has been so much talk about the new series which has familiar Love/Hate faces such as Killian Scott and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor but there's one main question that surrounds its plot...

Is it based on a true story?

Dublin Murders is not based on a true story. It's based on two fictional books from the 'Dublin Murder Squad' novel series by author Tana French.

Tana has taken two cases from her two books 'In The Woods' and 'The Likeness' to make up the first series.

Plot details and locations:

Set in Celtic Tiger Dublin in 2006, the thriller is based around a killing that rocks the town of 'Knocknaree' where a child has been murdered.

The drama flashes back to the 1980s where a similar case took place involving three children - one of whom survived.

Detectives Rob Reilly (Killian Scott) and Cassie Maddox (Sarah Greene) suspect that the cases over two decades apart are linked but Detective Reilly is more involved in the first murder than most of his work colleagues know.

The fictitious murder location is an archaeological site/forest where local developers want to build a new motorway.

Confusingly, a large chunk of the series is actually filmed in Belfast. While parts of Dublin are visible in the show, the majority of filming was done in Newtownards, Bangor and Newry in Northern Ireland.

Even the 'archaeological site' where the children go missing is Tollymore Forest in Northern Ireland.

When does it air in Ireland?

Two episodes of Dublin Murders will be aired every Wednesday at 9:35pm on RTE One while BBC One will air the episodes separately every Monday and Tuesday at 9pm.

The programme will be live-streamed on the RTE player and will be available to watch back on the player after being aired.

What has the reaction been like so far?

It's fair to say that people are absolutely loving the new hit television show but they are all saying the same thing: The plot is confusing and they're not sure whether it's a true story or not.

Lord Alan Sugar even took to Twitter to say: "Any one know what the Dublin Murders is about. Watched yesterday was confused, watching now not a clue. Plot too complicated. I am out."
