Is Donnyland the answer to ending the Ukraine-Russia war? A couple officials reportedly think so

  • Ukrainian officials suggested renaming a section of the disputed Donbas region “Donnyland” to appeal to Donald Trump’s ego and encourage him to push back against Russia’s territorial demands.
  • The idea, initially mentioned partly in jest by a Ukrainian translator, involved a 50-mile by 40-mile area that would not be fully controlled by either side, branded as an accomplishment for Trump.
  • A Ukrainian negotiator reportedly created an official green and gold flag and a national anthem for Donnyland using ChatGPT, though it is unclear if US officials saw the designs.
  • The concept of “Donnyland” has been used in peace talks, and officials also floated the idea of Trump’s Board of Peace managing the area.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration that Trump’s envoys, including Jared Kushner, had made repeated trips to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin but had not traveled to Kyiv for negotiations.
