Is car insurance valid during lockdown and other driving questions answered

As England enters the second week of national restrictions many have been wondering how lockdown might affect their car insurance.

Questions have also been raised about whether or not drivers will be covered by their insurance if they make non-essential trips.

That's because "lockdown 2", which came into force on November 5, came with a stay-at-home order from the Prime Minister to avoid all non-essential travel until December 2.

We've answered some of the most commonly-asked lockdown driving questions below:

Is my car insurance still valid during lockdown?

Yes, your car insurance is still valid during lockdown.

A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers said: "Your cover will not be affected if you drive during the lockdown period.

"However, all motorists should follow government advice and avoid non-essential travel."

Will my car insurance still cover me if I make non-essential trips?

Despite rumours to the contrary, your car insurance will still cover you if you make non-essential trips, and insurance firms have reassured drivers to that effect.

A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers said: "Using your car for non-essential travel will not risk invalidating your car insurance".

Insurance firms LV and Admiral have also confirmed that their customers will be covered for non-essential journeys - but they did advise drivers to avoid such trips in line with Government advice.

Can I declare my car off-road if I'm not using it?

Yes, if you're not using your car and it's parked on private land, you can declare it off-road. This means you'll get a tax refund for any full month's tax - and you don't have to insure it.

However, doing this will mean that your car will not be covered if it's damaged or stolen, and you won't be allowed to drive the car at all.

If I'm using my car less should my insurance payments go down?

Insurance comparison site Confused.com says every firm is different - but it is worth getting in touch with your insurer to see what they have to say.

In some cases if you are using your car much less than you normally would then you may get a reduction on your insurance costs.

However, be wary of admin fees, and find out if your company will charge you for making a change to your policy.
