Is Boris Johnson the British equivalent of Donald Trump?

Following his victory in the Tory leadership contest, Boris Johnson is the new prime minister - and one of the first people to congratulate him was Donald Trump.

The US president has previously called the new Tory leader "a very talented guy" who would make a "great" prime minister.

There have been comparisons made between Johnson and Trump - with the latter acknowledging their similarities.

He told a conference of conservative high school students on Tuesday: "They're saying Britain Trump. They call him Britain Trump and people are saying that's a good thing.

"They like me over there. That's what they wanted. That's what they need. He'll get it done. Boris is good. He's gonna do a good job."

But is Boris Johnson the British equivalent of Donald Trump?

The Claim

The Guardian's Cas Mudde asks if Johnson is really Britain's Trump.

While many European politicians have been portrayed as a local equivalent to Trump, she says that this time, "the similarities are indeed striking".

She argues: "Both are loudmouthed man-children, with a history of adultery and other scandals, whose professional success is a combination of immense privilege, unscrupulous opportunism and relentless self-promotion, all happily promoted by a complicit media environment.

"They share an "unorthodox" approach to politics as well as a "tell it like it is" communication style - media euphemisms for reckless opportunism and a combination of homophobia, racism, and sexism."

Mudde adds that Trump lies about himself, while Johnson lies about the European Union.

The Counterclaim

The Telegraph's Allison Pearson warns people to brace themselves for "lots of fatuous Trump comparisons and warnings" about Johnson.

For instance, a Labour MP complained about "the alt-right takeover of the country".

Pearson calls these comparisons "hysterical nonsense". She argues: "Less tiger of populism, more Tigger of Pop (the Eton society), Prime Minister Johnson will be a cosmopolitan centrist far closer to the politics of Tony Blair than Jeremy Corbyn is."

She says that Conservative party members have been waiting for Johnson as leader since 2016.

She writes: "They wanted Boris. It was always Boris. Yesterday, their sense of elation and excitement tinged with a nervousness which was clearly felt by the man himself, they finally got him."

The Facts

During the Tory leadership contest last month, Johnson was complimentary about the US president, suggesting that Britain could learn a lot from him.

He said: "Actually, he has many, many good qualities. This is a guy who, when all is said and done, has got the US economy motoring at about 3.6 per cent (it's actually 3.1 per cent).

"He's cut regulation, cut taxes in a way that has driven growth. My point is that... we Conservatives have failed, far too long, to talk up the agenda of free market economics."

Johnson added: "We should pay tribute to that."

However, it has not all been rosy words between the two. The former mayor of London attacked Trump in 2015 for his comments that claimed areas of London were dangerous due to radicalisation.

He said: "The only reason I wouldn't visit some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump."

Johnson also expressed concern about Trump during the 2016 presidential election. The Tory MP said: "I am genuinely worried that he could become president.

"I was in New York and some photographers were trying to take a picture of me and a girl walked down the pavement towards me and she stopped and she said, "Gee, is that Trump?' It was one of the worst moments."

He accused Trump of "quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of the president of the United States".
