Is Bolton the biggest town in England?

Many a town and city will try and boast to try and make sure they're the places to live and visit.

For a former mill town, there are plenty of things Bolton can make a claim to - with many even asking if it's a city

Centuries ago, it made its name as the centre for textiles - particularly the cotton industry - and today it is home to plenty of museums, entertainment venues and sporting facilities.

Let's also not forget that it is also the home of champion boxer Amir Khan, comedian Peter Kay, TV host Paddy McGuinness, and Olympic gold medalist Jason Kenny.

And there's one other thing that Bolton does have entire bragging rights for.

Bolton, which is historically part of Lancashire, is surrounded by several smaller towns and villages which when you put together forms the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton.

But this changed in the 20th century and city status is now awarded on numerous criteria including population size.
