Is Bill Belichick actually considering platooning his QBs? ‘If it helps us win,’ he says

After having the same quarterback under center for 20 years, the idea of platooning quarterbacks may seem foreign to fans. Nevertheless, it is an option that New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick won’t rule out.

In his press conference on Wednesday, Belichick said he would at least consider using two quarterbacks. It would certainly be different than what New England is used to. Cam Newton certainly adds a different layer of skill to the offense. He is not just a pocket passer, he can make things happen out of the pocket.

Jarrett Stidham can also run with the ball a little bit. However, he has shown to be a decent pocket passer. Heading into his second year, he should look to build on what he learned from last year.

The platoon system of quarterbacks is certainly something Belichick would consider. He said as much to the media on Wednesday.

“Look, I always say, I do what I think’s best for the team, what gives us the best chance to win,” Belichick said during his video conference with the media Wednesday. “So whatever that is I would certainly consider that. If it’s running an unbalanced line, double-unbalanced line, or 23 personnel, whatever it is, if it helps us win I would consider anything.”

When you think about it, it could bring a different dynamic to the New England offense. Newton could be used for red zone plays as he is a dual-threat quarterback. Stidham could be used for longer drives down the field. it gives the coaching staff of flexibility and different looks that they can use on offense.

The multi-skill set-ability that Newton has and the strong arm that Stidham has could make for a lethal combination. Especially when you consider that they are going to take on some top defenses in 2020, the ability to show multiple looks could be their friend.

The fact that Bill Belichick is even considering platooning his quarterbacks indicates to me that he is willing to try and change things up. The Patriots have been using a similar offensive system for the last two decades. Now, Belichick has the ability to use his personnel in ways that he never was able to before. This could help the Patriots in in a season where they are playing the NFL’s toughest schedule.

For the 2020 season, creativity and trying new things will certainly be the name of the game. In a shakeup from years past, it’s just another way that the tides are changing in New England.
