Is Biden on his way to Penn?

PHILADELPHIA _ Could Vice President Joe Biden be on his way to Penn?

Rumors have been swirling at the Ivy League university that Penn was trying to get both Biden and President Barack Obama to come to the university after they leave office in January, said Richard Gelles, former dean of Penn's School of Policy and Social Practice and current chair of child welfare and family violence in the school.

And Politico reported Wednesday that Biden, indeed, is on his way to Penn.

Stephen MacCarthy, Penn's vice president of university communications, declined comment.

"It totally makes sense," Gelles said.

Biden, a former Delaware senator who has taught at Widener University's law school, launched his "moonshot" initiative to cure cancer at Penn's Abramson Cancer Center in January. Beau Biden, the vice president's late son and a Penn graduate, died of brain cancer last year at age 46.

Biden also attended his granddaughter Naomi's graduation from Penn in May, and he served as Penn's commencement speaker in 2013.

Gelles said Penn President Amy Gutmann likely would be able to get support for an endowed chair position for Biden relatively quickly.
