Is Bengals’ Brian Callahan a head coach candidate to watch?

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan doesn’t get a ton of attention.

Some of that is because he’s not often in front of the mics and dropping notable quotes. Most of it is because he’s working in the shadow of head coach Zac Taylor, who directs the offense and has the whole “Sean McVay understudy” thing going for him.

But Callahan just got an interesting shout-out from NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah, who listed him as one of the “others to watch in coming years” when it comes to future head coach candidates around the NFL.

Unlike names like Joe Brady, Callahan didn’t actually get a writeup. But the 37-year-old coordinator might indeed be someone the rest of the league starts to eye, especially if Joe Burrow’s development keeps trending upward and the Bengals start fielding consistently good offenses.

If nothing else, hires like Taylor show some NFL teams are willing to gamble on younger head coaches who need to “develop” just like quarterbacks. And Callahan might fit the bill in a year or two, depending on how things go.

Right now? Callahan’s not on the radar. But don’t be surprised if he pops on it in a year or two.
