Is Ancoats set to get another fish and chips restaurant?

A new restaurant is set to open on Great Ancoats Street, taking up a new commercial unit within the Astley Building.

Plans have been submitted for Street Urchin, which was previously pencilled in to open at Cutting Room Square.

Street Urchin will have a ground floor restaurant area and a mezzanine level providing further seating, in a unit opposite the troubled Kettlebell Kitchen healthy fast food restaurant.

Kevin and Rachel Choudhary are still behind the project - both of the Victoria pub in Altrincham.

When Street Urchin was first proposed in 2017, it was to have a menu focused on seafood - thanks to Kevin's fisherman father.

Plans back then included a display fridge so that diners could select their own fish to be either fried, grilled or poached - a lavish and contemporary take on a traditional chippy offering.

With Hip Hop Chip Shop now open on Blossom Street in the same suburb, it's not yet clear if any changes will be afoot for Street Urchin.

The M.E.N. has approached the team behind the project for comment.
