Is Amazon still delivering in the UK? Retailer explains position during coronavirus pandemic

The government has announced that all shops selling non-essential items must close to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Boris Johnson’s address last night - which came after retailers such as Primark and John Lewis had already announced they were closing - has left many people asking about online orders.

In response to those questions Amazon has announced that it intends to keep operating during the lockdown.

In a statement the company said: “We believe our role serving customers and the community during this time is a critical one, and we want to make sure our customers can get the items they need, when they need them.

“As COVID-19 has spread, we've recently seen an increase in people shopping online which has had an impact on how we serve our customers, but we are working around the clock with our selling partners to ensure availability of essential products, and to continue to bring on additional capacity to deliver customer orders.”

Amazon has also clarified its position by answering frequently asked questions from shoppers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Can I place an order? Will Amazon deliver my parcel?

Amazon has said it will continue with deliveries and shoppers can “check the current delivery times at order check-out or via Your Orders in your account.

However the company has given this warning for delivery addresses: “When selecting a delivery address, be aware that companies and businesses may be closed and unable to receive parcels.”

Are delivery times affected?

Amazon will deliver to “the most affected customers, many of whom have no other way to get essential items”. As a result it is prioritising items such as food, health and personal care products, books and items required for working from home.

“As a result, please note that delivery times for some items may be longer than usual at the moment,” it said.

Is it possible to return items?

“Yes, you can continue to return items. Go to My Orders to return an item or check the return window for your order.”

Is it safe to receive orders?

Amazon has this message to reassure customers about deliveries: “The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.”

Is it possible to reduce contact with the driver when they deliver my order?

With thousands of people around the country self-isolating and millions more obeying social distancing guidelines, Amazon drivers are reducing contact with customers.

The company has said drivers will be “pacing placing packages at the customer’s doorstep and stepping back”.

Amazon added: “If an ID check is required, these are now performed at a distance.”
