Is Aldi cheaper than Lidl? We went to find out

Leaving the house to go on a weekly food shop is inevitably going to leave you shorter on cash than when you left, which is why more and more people across the country have turned to the cheaper supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl.

However, with more and more of the German discounters popping up around Bristol every year, have you ever wondered which one is cheaper for a weekly shop?

We went to both supermarkets and bought a near identical trolley of fruit, veg, meats, fish, dairy and savoury foods to find out who would win the battle of the bargains.

It was an extremely tight contest, but Lidl managed to pip Aldi by a matter of pennies, thirty seven of them to be precise.

After thirty items each, Lidl's total came to £37.15, and Aldi's £37.52.

The two shops we visited were on opposite sides of the road in Muller Road, Horfield, and the geogrophical similarity of the two was reflected in the similarity of the prices.

For example, eggs, bread, pasta, mince, sausages and other products were the exact same price in both supermarkets and items such as pizza, broccoli and snack bars were separated by less than ten pence.

From shopping at the two of them it's very hard to separate the pair.

Aldi only opened its first shop in the UK in 1990 and was followed across the channel by Lidl 1994, in that short amount of time they have accumulated more than 900 stores nationwide between them.

All of the 'big four' supermarkets have gone through a sales drop during the last three months and have struggled to live up to their performances last summer.

But by comparison, Lidl has had a sales rise of 7.7 per cent and has gained an estimated half a million new shoppers, according to grocery market figures from Kantar.

Bristol has 13 Lidl stores - two of which have built this year - and 5 Aldi stores.
