Is ageing food still safe to eat?

Every week a Guardian Money reader submits a question, and it’s up to you to help him or her out – a selection of the best answers will appear in next Saturday’s paper.

This week’s question:

On moving home we unearthed lots of forgotten food – much of it quite expensive but several months out of date. My partner won’t let me use it, but I think it’s probably fine. Is a two-year-old can of tuna too old? What about tinned peas? Can any out-of-date experts advise on the protocol here?

What do you think?
