Is a fan or air conditioner better for keeping cool in the heatwave?

  • Electric fans cool individuals by circulating air and aiding sweat evaporation, but they do not lower the room’s ambient temperature, whereas portable air conditioners actively reduce room temperature by extracting hot air and venting it outside.
  • Portable air conditioners are significantly more effective at cooling an entire room during heatwaves, with higher British Thermal Unit (BTU) ratings indicating suitability for larger spaces, while fans primarily offer a cooling sensation.
  • Fans are considerably cheaper to purchase, starting from around £38, and are much more economical to run, costing only a few pence overnight, compared to portable air conditioners which range from £240 to £700 and can cost 20p-60p per hour to operate.
  • Fans are lighter, more portable, and easier to store, typically weighing between 1kg and 5kg, and require minimal setup; in contrast, portable air conditioners are bulky, heavy (over 20kg), and necessitate a cumbersome exhaust hose installation through a window.
  • The choice between a fan and a portable air conditioner depends on budget, room size, and the severity of indoor temperatures, with air conditioners offering superior cooling performance for consistently hot homes, while fans provide a cost-effective solution for general comfort.
