Is 5G dangerous? Fears Scots could be at risk with new mobile network

Edinburgh has become the first city in Scotland to officially have 5G network coverage, and Glasgow is set to follow suit next month.

5G is set to revolutionise how we interact with technology on our phones by improving internet speeds, giving a more reliable data connect and offering near-instant connection when opening apps and websites.

EE is the first provider to launch, with Vodafone live on July 3 and other main networks O2 and Three set to get on board by the end of the year.

5G is not a replacement for 4G. It simply adds another layer to provide a faster, smoother and better mobile experience.

But it has people wondering just how safe 5G is.

There's claims the new advanced network's radiation could damage brains and fertility due to the radiofrequency radiation (RFR).

There will be a potential increase in exposure to radio waves because of the need to add more telecommunication towers in the area.

However, Public Health England (PHE) says it does not expect 5G to impact on people’s health.

Its head of radiation dosimetry Simon Mann said: “It is possible that there may be a small increase in overall exposure to radio waves when 5G is added to an existing telecommunications network or in a new area.

“However, the overall exposure is expected to remain low relative to guidelines and as such there should be no consequences for public health.”

A PHE spokesman added the body is committed to making sure 5G radio waves comply with International Committee on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines.
