Irvinestown clock restored to former glory after project

After months of work, the 170-year-old Irvinestown Clock has been returned to its former glory.

The clock, which dates to approximately 1850, is the last in the district with an original working mechanism, comprising a "flat bed" construction and "pin wheel" escapement.

The clock tower itself, located at the southern end of Irvinestown’s main street, dates back to 1734.

Two decades of existence were beginning to take their toll, with the clock no longer holding the correct time and the clock face in need of repair.

The clock face was refurbished by the Council's building maintenance team, while the clock mechanism was restored by Canavan Clockmakers.

Having been shrouded in scaffolding for the past number of months, the restored clock was unveiled following the completion of the council project.

Councillor Errol Thompson said the programme of works meant "this important piece of local history is retained for future generations."

"The transformation has been remarkable and is testament to the care and dedication of those skilled craftspeople involved in the restoration process,” he added.

An ancient cemetery can still be seen to the rear of the Clock Tower, where a chapel of ease was also once present.

Headstones depict the skills of earlier stonemasons dating back to the 17th century, while wrought iron gates at the cemetery entrance reflect the workings of the clock.

The oldest recorded headstones are Hubert Holmes, 18 February 1694, Daniel Irvine 15 March 1702, and Catherine Kennedy 27 March 1710.
