Irvine woman joins protests ahead of bull running in Pamplona

An Irvine woman has joined a protest against bullfighting in Pamplona, Spain.

Claire Oldfather, 30, was among dozens of supporters of PETA and Spanish animal-protection group AnimaNaturalis at a ‘crime scene’ cordoned off with yellow tape at the Plaza Consistorial in Pamplona.

The activists – who had travelled from around the world – lay nearly naked inside outlines of bulls to ‘remind onlookers that bulls are made of flesh, blood, and bones and feel fear and pain, just as we do’.

The protest came ahead of the city’s running of the bulls, in which bulls are chased down the streets to the bullring ahead of a bullfight.

“It’s 2019, and no living being should be slowly stabbed to death for the sick satisfaction of a rowdy mob,” said Claire.

Claire, a former pupil of Greenwood Academy, added: “I think its absolutely heartbreaking that in 2019, watching innocent animals being tormented and stabbed to death is still considered ‘entertainment’.

“I was glad to be there on Thursday to stand beside fellow animal activists.”

A keen animal charity supporter, Claire, who works in marketing, has lived in Spain for four years. Her parents still live in Irvine.

She added: “I used to volunteer with Cats Protection and Hessilhead wildlife centre in Ayrshire. Now I try to get involved with animal charities over here whenever I can.”
