Irvine Welsh trolls Michael Gove in hilarious tweet over Tory MPs cocaine use

Irvine Welsh has hilariously trolled wannabe Prime Minister after the MP admitted taking cocaine "on numerous occasions".

The Tory leadership candidate yesterday revealed he 'regretted' taking the Class A drug when he was a young journalist more than 20 years ago.

Gove used to work for the Aberdeen Press and Journal (P&J) newspaper group and was a trainee reporter there at the turn of 1990.

In response to an online headline saying 'Gove deeply regrets taking cocaine', the Trainspotting author, 60, said he "empathised" with Gove, tweeting: "I’m always the same the next day if I get s**t gear."

His comment racked up 2.5k likes and 330 retweets since being posted around 8am this morning.

The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs's startling confession came in an interview with the Daily Mail ahead of a tell-all book about the politician.

The 51-year-old, from Edinburgh, also claimed his previous drug use should not be held against him as he bids to take over from Theresa May.

He said: "I took drugs on several occasions at social events more than 20 years ago.

"At the time I was a young journalist. It was a mistake. I look back and I think, I wish I hadn’t done that.

"It was 20 years ago and yes, it was a mistake. But I don’t believe that past mistakes disqualify you."

Gove's cocaine admission comes after fellow Tory leadership contender Rory Stewart apologised for smoking opium at a wedding in Iran.

International Development Secretary Stewart said: "I think it was a very stupid mistake and I did it 15 years ago, and I actually went on in Iran to see the damage that opium was doing to communities."

He added: "I've seen it as a prisons minister. It was something that was very wrong, I made a stupid mistake.

"I was at a wedding in a large community meeting and somebody passed this pipe around the room and I smoked it - I shouldn't have done, I was wrong."

Former Tory Prime Minister David Cameron was also previously caught up in drugs claims.

It was alleged he was part of an Oxford “dope smoking group” called the Flam Club.

The latest revelations about top Tory Government ministers flouting the law and taking Class A substances come as the Daily Record highlighted the issue of spiralling drug deaths Scotland.

Many experts say criminalising drug use has deflected from the reality that it is a public health crisis most often linked to poverty and deprivation.

Gove's admission that he took Class A drugs took place just 24 hours after a desperate mum was stopped by UK Border Force officers from bringing in Class B cannabis oil that was to be used as a medicinal aid to stop her severely epileptic daughter suffering hundreds of seizures a day.
