Irvine Vineburgh boxing club starlet Brooke Neely flies flag for Scotland in Zagreb Cup final

Irvine Vineburgh boxer Brooke Neely flew the flag for Scotland at a top international tournament.

The 16-year-old, from Stevenston, was one of three fighters selected by Boxing Scotland to compete at the Zagreb Cup in Croatia last weekend.

And Brooke didn’t disappoint, reaching the final where she lost on a split decision to reigning European schoolgirl champion Layla Abdullatif of Cyprus.

Proud Vineburgh coach Alec Mullen said: “Brooke was fantastic. We thought she did enough to win the fight but it was very close.

“To lose so narrowly to a two-time European champion is a good gauge for Brooke to see where she’s sitting at.”

Brooke, a two-time British Champion, returns to action on Saturday when she’ll fight English champion Francis Cope at her home show in Birmingham.

Alec added: “It’s another big test but if Brooke can keep beating English girls, she’s got a chance of getting into the GB set-up.”
