Irvine Vics v Shotts Bon Accord: Dougie MacDuff says Ayrshire strugglers can surprise league leaders

Dougie MacDuff insists struggling Irvine Vics are capable of springing a surprise against high-flying Shotts Bon Accord tomorrow.

The sides meet at Victoria Park with almost the full length of the West of Scotland League Conference A table separating them.

Second-bottom Vics clocked up their 17th defeat from 19 league games as they went down 3-1 away to Glasgow University last Friday night.

Shotts – the league’s top scorers with 60 goals – maintained their two-point gap at the top with a 1-0 win against Girvan.

Every stat points to a comfortable away win for the North Lanarkshire outfit who ran out 5-0 winners when the side’s met in the corresponding fixture in July.

But MacDuff is adamant that his side are better than results suggests and insists Shotts won’t get it easy.

He said. “I‘m really looking forward to it and I know Shotts will be in for a game.

“When we played them at their place it was 0-0 after half-an-hour, then we went and lost three goals in eight minutes.

“We’ve shown we can give some of the better teams a game on our day.

“There’s 12 minutes of highlights from our game against Glasgow Uni and about 80 per cent of it is us battering them. We hit the woodwork a couple of times and missed a penalty but we’ve been punished again for our own mistakes.”

MacDuff reckons his players deserve enormous praise for their attitude amid a demoralising run of form.

He added: “I’ve never known a club like it for the enthusiasm about the place. We just need a break.”
