Irvine Vics can turn the corner thanks to team spirit, says captain Jamie Donnelly

Jamie Donnelly insists Irvine Vics can turn the corner thanks to a fantastic team spirit under new boss Dougie MacDuff.

Skipper Donnelly says the mood in the Westenders camp is positive despite a winless start to the season.

A nightmare run of form continued last week with a midweek league loss against Saltcoats Victoria and defeat in Friday night’s Marymass derby.

But Donnelly insists Vics are just a rub of the green away from putting things right.

He said: “It will change for us, I’m positive about that.

“Once we get that first win I’m sure we can push on from it. We’ve got a great spirit in the dressing room and that’s credit to Dougie and his coaching staff.

“I came in at the start of the season and we had three players. Our performances are getting better. We just need a wee bit of luck.”

Donnelly reckons the 2-1 defeat away to Saltcoats – a result which saw the Westenders slip to the foot of Conference A in the West of Scotland League – typified the kind of season they've been having.

He added: "I've played Junior football for 15 years and I've never seen a game like that in my life.

"We battered them for 89 minutes making 25, 26 chances – scored one – and they created three and scored two."

Vics are on league duty away to Maybole this Saturday.

Boss MacDuff saw enough in Friday's 1-0 defeat to Irvine Meadow to convince him is players are heading in the right direction.

He said: “The first half was all about competing and making sure we’re still in the game in the second half when we could bring fresh legs on.

“I thought we did that and we created a few chances.

“You might only get one or two chances against a team like Meadow though and you’ve got to be clinical. There are more positives than negatives, though.”
