Irvine Vics boss says even he's surprised by side's stunning start to the season

Irvine Vics boss Brian McLuckie admits even he’s been surprised by his side’s stunning start to the season.

The Westenders lie second in the Championship after clocking up seven points from their first three games.

McLuckie had fully expected his new-look side to be toiling at the other end of the table.

But wins against Gartcairn on Saturday and promotion hopefuls Arthurlie in midweek on top of taking an opening day point at Darly have Vics sitting pretty.

“We’re seven points in front of where I thought we might be,” admitted McLuckie.

“We’ve had a very tough first few league fixtures and the players deserve credit.

“Last year, we failed to take any points from Arthurlie so to get a win at this stage of the season is great.

“But we won’t be getting carried away. It’s a very difficult league with everyone capable of beating each other.

“Our target is still simply to stay in the division.”

Vics host Neilston on Saturday and McLuckie is expecting another difficult afternoon. He added: “They beat us twice last year so anything we can take from them will be a bonus.”
