Irvine town centre traffic chaos is 'accident waiting to happen' as road is sealed off

Irvine town centre has been heavily affected by traffic issues this morning.

The road at Bank Street and High Street has been sealed off as work on the road gets underway.

But local businesses and taxi drivers claim they were not made aware of the works.

And now a taxi driver reckons it's an "accident waiting to happen".

He told the Irvine Herald: "We had no warning about this, the first we knew about it was when we got to the road this morning.

"One of the taxi drivers had to reverse on to a roundabout which isn't safe.

"Also a lorry had no option but to reverse all the way back up the street.

"We have to U-turn which isn't ideal because buses are doing the same and swinging right out when they turn.

"It really is an accident waiting to happen."

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We are now reaching the end of our public realm works in Irvine Town Centre. We think the works – which are expected to be completed in the coming weeks -  will greatly improve the environment for businesses, residents, shoppers and people visiting the town.

“We publish Temporary Traffic Road Orders when closing any of our roads across North Ayrshire and notify the relevant stakeholders – including Stagecoach and SPT – ahead of works commencing. Letters were sent out to all businesses by our contractors notifying them of works and road closures.

“Regulatory signage in accordance with traffic regulations together with barriers have been erected to direct traffic whilst the works are being carried out. The road is expected to re-open on week commencing March 16

“We apologise for any inconvenience.”
