Irvine rock band celebrate special milestone with new album launch

Irvine rockers Culann are celebrating more than a decade together with the launch of their second album – and admit they still take inspiration from their hometown.

‘The Great Ecumene’ – a self-funded release that has been three years in the making – was given a first airing at a sold-out headline gig at Audio in Glasgow on Saturday night.

Now the band are hoping the record can introduce them to a whole new audience to build on the loyal fanbase they’ve built up over the last 11 years.

Culann first formed in 2008 and is made up of singer PJ Kelly, drummer Sean Kelly, lead guitarist Greg Irish, bass player Calum David and keyboard player Ross McCluskie.

PJ said: “10 years is not something that a lot of bands manage to do but we have all been friends since school which makes a difference.

“We are all from the town and Irvine has played a vital role in what we are today. Some of our songs pay tribute to the town and our experiences there, its a noticeable recurring theme within our music.

“It’s been a long journey since the debut album in 2012. We recorded it over three different sessions spanning three years and we were determined not to rush the final product.

“Its a total DIY effort, self funded and our guitarist Greg mixed the entire record which we are all proud of.

“We worked alongside an award winning illustrator Peter Strain for the album artwork to add the finishing touches to the whole thing.

“A lot has changed in our lives but we all still had that passion to release a new album which can be difficult nowadays, the result is the new album The Great Ecumene.”

PJ admitted the reception the band received at Audio has given them a major boost.

He added: “It was possibly the most enjoyable headline show we’ve ever played, there are not many better experiences for a band than to play a sold out gig and see people enjoying your music.

“Our friends in fellow Irvine band Helix Vision were able to join us on the night which made it extra special.”

The album is available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.
