Irvine pub's Christmas Day opening gesture to help those feeling lonely

An Irvine boozer is set to open its doors on Christmas Day to combat loneliness within the community.

The Turf, based in Eglinton Street, will open between 10am and 2pm tomorrow and serve up free tea, coffee and snacks.

Kind-hearted staff posted an open invitation on the watering hole's Facebook page to those spending the big day alone.

It read: "Are you gonna be sitting alone on Christmas Day? We at The Turf say, NO!

"Make your way down and grab a bar stool. We will put the kettle on and get the mince pies and shortbread out – no cash needed, it’s on the house.

"No one should be alone on Christmas Day."

The pub's post has already been shared 700 times in just one day while Tesco has shown its support by donating tea bags and bakes.

Big-hearted bar boss Angie Gray told Ayrshire Live: "I don't want anyone to be alone on Christmas Day and the bar staff all feel the same.

"Last year, we had about a dozen people turn up for a cup of tea and some conversation on the day.

"A lot of our regulars are older gentlemen and a fair amount of older gents are on their own these days.

"It's nice for them to come round and have some company and conversation rather than sitting home alone.

"I'm hoping to expand next year and potentially serve up some Christmas dinners. We'll see how we go."
