Irvine Meadow striker Sam McCloy pledges more goals after finally breaking scoring duck

Irvine Meadow striker Sam McCloy has promised more goals will follow after finally breaking his duck for the club in their South Challenge Cup win over Penicuik Athletic.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Medda in July, netted twice in a 5-2 victory as his side eased into the fourth round of the competition on Saturday.

And despite going through a four-month scoring drought, the former Dalry ace admitted he fancied himself for a hat-trick after finally getting off the mark.

"Getting the first goal was a good wee lift - every time I went forward I felt I was going to score." said McCloy.

"I was hoping to get a third but they took me off the park!

"That's all I needed to my game to be honest, goals, and there's definitely more to come now."

McCloy also chipped in with an assist for strike partner Connor Boyd who bagged a brace of his own.

Boyd returned the favour in the second half, and McCloy reckons the deadly duo are beginning to form a fruitful partnership up top.

He added: "There's more of an understanding between us now.

"We're both kind of similar players but Connor's obviously a big goal threat and I've got lots of pace.

"I'm starting to see where he runs now and know where he wants the ball without him even asking for it.

"I talk to him more off the park as well so I'm getting used to him as a person too."

Meadow co-boss Colin Spence insisted he never lost faith in the youngster despite the barren run.

He said: "Strikers are judged on their goals but Sam's been doing a good job for us.

"I kept telling him every single week, 'you'll get your goal'.

"For him to finally get one and then a second - I'm delighted for him. Hopefully he can kick on now.

"After his first goal he did a few things that really caught my eye.

"He looked like he was 10 feet tall all of a sudden. That's what goals do for a striker.

"He's still a young boy and he'll take a massive boost from that."
