Irvine Meadow snap up new keeper as bosses take 'tried and tested' transfer tack

Irvine Meadow have snapped up former Kilwinning Rangers and Darvel goalkeeper David Markey.

The experienced shot-stopper signs as a free agent after spending last season with Annbank.

Markey becomes Meadow's second signing of the close-season following former Hurlford midfielder Mick Wardrope's arrival last week.

And delighted Medda co-boss Colin Spence reckons both signings fit in perfectly with the West of Scotland Premier Division outfit's new transfer policy of going for 'tried and tested' aces.

He said: "David comes with good experience and a good presence. We managed to get him in quite quickly after hearing he was available.

"We've been looking to add some tried and tested players to the squad. Guys who have been over the course.

"We recognise we are a young team and that your form can dip as a result of that.

"Last season was a bit of a free-hit for us with no consequences and we did quite well.

"But it's going to be an unbelievable league this year with seven teams going down.

"It looks like we could be playing two games a week at the start of the season so we need to hit the ground running. To do that we need bodies and we're looking to add that wee bit experience."

Meadow are in the market for another three players and a second keeper to provide competition between the sticks.

But Spence admits he and cool-manager James Latta are mindful of getting the most out of their transfer kitty.

He added: "We've got another two or three irons in the fire but they could go either way at this stage.

"It could come down to budgets. We don't have the biggest compared to other teams so we just have to wait and see at the moment.

"We have to use our budget the best way we can. We're going with a smaller squad this season and we don't want to use it up too quickly. We'll try to keep a little back because players always become available three or four weeks into the season.

"It's about boxing clever with what we have."
