Irvine Meadow co-boss says flying start has never been so important

James Latta insists a flying start could hold the key to a successful season for Irvine Meadow.

The Medda co-boss reckons it’s never been more important to hit the ground running with eight teams facing the chop from the top division of the West of Scotland League.

He said: “I think there will be a big surprise this year.

“I think there’s a good chance one of the big boys could find themselves struggling.

“All it takes is a bad run of games and you’re sucked right in there.

“Hopefully we won’t be one of them. If we can keep everyone fit then we should be fine.

“A good start is a must though. If I look at our first five fixtures we want to be taking at least 12 points from that.

“We need to win the first game against Glenafton and take it from there.”

Latta is happy with the business Meadow have done over the summer to bring in five new faces.

But he’s wary of the impact Covid might have on his squad in the weeks and months ahead.

He added: “It’s going to be one of those seasons.

“You’re going to have players missing one week and others out the next week.

“It’s just one of those things you have be prepared for.

“We’ve signed a couple of extra bodies to give us a squad of 20 which is still quite light but we’ve got Under-20s there who can come and help us out.”
