Irvine Meadow close in on transfer targets as departures are confirmed

Irvine Meadow co-boss Colin Spence insists a revamp of facilities can help the club compete for the best players as they closes in on their top transfer targets.

Medda kicked off a close-season recruitment drive this week with the capture of former Hurlford United and Kilwinning Rangers midfielder Mick Wardrope.

Spence reckons the 24-year-old's arrival is a real coup and believes major ground improvements at Meadow Park, including the installation of floodlights, played a part in Wardrope's decision to put pen to paper.

Now he's hopeful it can be a significant factor again as he looks to add up to a further four new faces to his squad ahead of next season.

A deal for an experienced midfielder could be concluded later this week with Spence and co-boss James Latta also closing in on a new goalkeeper to replace Kyle Marley who has left the club due to work commitments.

Spence said: "It's well known we don't have the biggest budget but hopefully the great work that has been done off the park in the last few months can be an equaliser for us when it comes to trying to bring top players to the club.

"Getting Mick in was an easy one. James knew him from their time together at Kilwinning and sounded him out about his future.

"Mick had his pick of four of five clubs. He was arguably Hurlford's best player last year.

"But he was impressed with all the work that has gone on at the club and believes he can be successful here.

"He fits exactly the type of player we are trying to bring in .

"He'll bring an energy to the middle of the park and he's a guy who'll get you a good few goals from that area too.

"We're not too far away from closing another deal for an experience midfielder which should hopefully happen this week. We need another goalkeeper and we have a couple of other irons in the fire."

Spence is ready to go with a more slimline squad next term and as such has confirmed that striker Michael Reilly and midfielder Jamie Henderson have been allowed to leave the club.

He added: "Michael and Jamie were a bit unfortunate in that the lockdown curtailed their chances of making an impression and they go with our best wishes."
