Irvine Meadow caretaker managers reveal they want the job permanently

Irvine Meadow caretaker managers Colin Spence and James Latta today insisted they want the job permanently.

The duo took the team for this afternoon's league clash against Kilwinning Rangers following Brian McGinty's shock resignation on Tuesday.

Both played as Meadow lost 3-0 with Spence red carded for a first half handball.

But none of that has put them off throwing their hats in to the ring for the job full time.

Now they insist they are ready to hang up their boots to focus fully on management and quickly restore some stability.

Spence, 36, who had planned to retire from playing in the summer, said: "We're been thrown in to it and do you know what, maybe the timing is right. Maybe everything happens for a reason.

"If it's offered to us we'll go and give it a bash. We've certainly got enough experience.  We've both played at this level for 15, 16 years.

"We know the Premier League. Our contacts are in the Premier League and we know the teams and players.

"It's maybe not a bad time to get it. The gaffer did a good job here.

"There's maybe a wee case of a rebuilding job to be done but if we get it just now, there's three months of the season left and we can start doing that and start putting the feelers out for next season.

"Next season is when we've got to put our mark on it as our team."

Latta, 34, insists it would be impossible to continue playing if the duo land the job.

"Obviously we're going into the twilight of our playing careers,  he said.

"I think if we take the job we will probably have to stop playing.

"You can't combine both - it's two hard. Especially at a big club like Irvine Meadow.

"The only way we will go into it is if we are 100 per cent committed.

"If we get the backing of the committee then it's a no-brainer, we'll take it.

"If they feel we're the right men for the job then that'll be it, and we'll see what contract we get."

Spence and Latta, who made their name in the game during a trophy laden spell at Auchinleck Talbot, believe it's vital the club appoint someone as quickly as possible.

Meadow chairman Robert Jeffrey said in midweek that the duo would be in charge until at least the middle of February.

James Latta won five Scottish Junior Cups with Auchinleck (SNS Group)

But Latta, insisted: "We've only said we'll take today's game. We've not said we'll take it any further.

"We'll speak to the committee either tonight or tomorrow and we'll go from there.

"Boys are out of contract, we need to get players in, get singed up as quick as we can.  If it's going to be finalised it'll need to be soon.

"There's no point just going till the end of the season. How can we sign players in there and then another manager comes in at the end of the season. It's pointless."

Spence added: "It cant go on any longer whether they want to give us it or bring someday else in."
