Irvine Meadow boss slams 'schoolboy' defending but takes share of blame for creativity problem

Brian McGinty slammed his side’s ‘schoolboy’ defending against Kilbirnie - but admitted HE has to find a way to help his players break teams down.

The Irvine Meadow boss kept his players in the dressing room for 40 minutes after Saturday's 3-1 defeat.

And when he emerged he pulled no punches in his assessment of his side’s performance.

“That’s the second home game I’ve had to stand here and say the opposition deserved to win,” he said.

“The two goals we lost were schoolboy goals. If you lose cheap goals like that you put yourself under pressure and teams can go and sit in.

“With the quality of players Kilbirnie have they can sit in and it’s very hard to break them down. They’ve also got good players on the counter attack.

“We’ve got to be better at breaking teams down.

“At 2-1 down we made the wrong decisions. At no point did I think we got a wee head of steam up which is disappointing.

“As a coaching team we’ve got to look at that and think when we go behind in games how we change it to help the players.”

There was a question mark over the award of the free-kick that led to Kilbirnie’s first goal but McGinty refused to point the finger at anyone but his players.

“Whether it was a free kick or not, once it’s given we’ve got to defend it better.

“The ball came across our box at head height. One of our strengths is attacking set pieces but we didn’t do that.

“We can ‘t lose goals like that. The second goal you wouldn’t see at schoolboy level.”

Captain Ben Carson reckons Medda will have to get the result out their system before this weekend’s league visit to Guys Meadow to face Premiership bottom dogs Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

He said: “It’s a hard one to take. All across the pitch we weren’t good enough.

“When we scored we came on to a bit of a game but we couldn’t get a second. We can’t dwell on it too much because we’ve got a massive game coming up.”
