Colin Spence has warned his Irvine Meadow players they can’t afford to freeze in the spotlight ahead of a historic night for the club.
Meadow host Largs Thistle on league duty this evening in the first senior football match to be played under floodlights at Meadow Park.
But Spence is urging his side not to caught up in the occasion as they look to build on three straight Premier Division wins.
Confidence is high in the camp after Saturday’s 2-0 victory away to Cumnock but Spence is wary of any slip-ups as Meadow begin a punishing run of five games in 10 days.
He said: “It’s a big occasion for the club and there’s something special about playing under the lights.
“What we can’t afford to do is get distracted by that.
“When we lost to Glenafton on the opening day of the season, I still maintain we got caught up in the occasion.
“The players were too excited and it inhibited them.
“We will have to be right on our game against Largs because they will be coming here to win.
“Results haven’t gone their way recently but they’ve had a tough run of fixtures and might see playing us as a chance to turn around their season.
“They have real firepower with the likes of Keir Milliken, Scott Adam and Owen McGinty up front and we have to be really careful.
“It’s the first in a real tough run of games for us and three points would set us up nicely.”
Kick off is 7.30pm.
