Irvine Meadow boss Brian McGinty reckons Sharpe shooter is defender's worst nightmare

Brian McGinty reckons Brendan Sharpe can develop into every defender’s worst nightmare.

Striker Sharpe inspired Irvine Meadow to an incredible comeback win against Kilbirnie on Saturday with boss McGinty hailing his performance 'unbelievable'.

He won his side a penalty then set up the winning goal as Meadow came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Valefield Park and finish 2019 on a high.

McGinty, a former striker himself, had nothing but admiration for the former Queen’s Park ace’s all round performance – and reckons the 23-year-old can get even better.

“I thought Brendan, playing up front on his own, was unbelievable, he said.

“He was up against two very experienced centre halves in Dom McLaren and Mick O’Byrne and he ran them ragged.

“Having played up top myself back in the day, I know how hard a shift it is.

“He makes it look easy. He covers so much ground and he just terrorised them. They didn’t know what to do with him half the time.

“He must be horrendous to play against.

Brendan Sharpe enjoyed a good tussle with Dom McLaren (Irvine Herald)

“He came in injured at the start of the season but he’s done a lot of work in the gym and come back so strong.

“Last year, he would still do the work but I thought he got shoved off the ball too easily.

“The good thing for us is, he’s still young.”

Man of the match Sharpe admitted he enjoyed going toe-to-toe with his old Queen’s teammate McLaren.

“We know each others game and weaknesses. I ran him down the line because I know he doesn’t like that.

“We’re good pals and there was a bit of banter between us but we were giving each other the usual knocks.”

Meadow host Premiership bottom dogs Kirkintilloch Rob Roy this weekend but McGinty insists they’ll get his full respect.

“Rob Roy have started to pick up results so that will  be a really hard game,” he added.
