Irvine Meadow ace reveals pride in pulling on jersey and how he'll relish new role

Jared Willet knows what it means to play for the jersey after four years at Irvine Meadow.

The 25-year-old admits he takes enormous pride in representing his hometown club.

It was one of two reasons why signing a new deal to extend his stay at Meadow Park was a no-brainer for the utility man.

The other was the chance to play under former teammates Colin Spence and James Latta.

Willet is excited at the prospect of a new era with the management duo and a fresh challenge as a player.

Having spent the vast majority of the last few seasons at left back, he is set for a more attacking role next season as Meadow adopt a more gung-ho approach.

He said: “Colin and James are two of the most decorated guys in Junior football with so many trophies to their name.

“Going on to a park with them was an absolute pleasure and they have the respect of all the players now as managers.

“They’ve said to me they want me playing in a more forward role which is something I’m really looking forward to.

“I’ve played up front before with Winton Rovers so it’s not entirely new to me.

“I think it will good to approach games in a different way.

“Last season, at times it was more about winning ugly, particularly against the bigger teams.

“But I don’t see why we can’t open up - we’ve certainly got players capable of playing that way.”

Willet’s energetic and combative style has made him a firm fans’ favourite.

It’s no exaggeration to suggest that had last season not been cut short by the coronavirus outbreak he’d have been be a serious contender for a player of the year award.

But wearing the Medda jersey is not something he takes for granted.

He added: “Coming from Irvine, I take a lot of pride in playing for Meadow.”

“People always want to talk football when I’m out, even when I’m walking the dog, so I know how important it is to play for the club.”
