Irvine Meadow 3 Troon 1: Medda return to winning ways as defender sees red for remark to rival

Irvine Meadow bounced back from successive league defeats with a comfortable victory against 10-man Troon.

Strike ace Eddie McTernan sent them on their way with the opening goal after 32 minutes.

And when Troon defender Dean Keenan saw red a few seconds later for foul and abusive language, it put Medda firmly in the driving seat.

McTernan made it 2-0 early in the second half and although Troon pulled one back through substitute John Gemmell, Meadow put the seal on all three points courtesy of Mark McLennan’s 78th minute penalty.

A win was no more than Brian McGinty’s men deserved after looking the more threatening side for most of the afternoon.

They were on the front foot from the first whistle, Colin Spence blazing a shot from the edge of the box over the bar inside the opening minute.

McTernan then met Jared Willet’s driven cross from the left at the near post but couldn’t sort his feet in time to get a shot on target.

Brendan Sharpe should have fired the hosts in front in 13 minutes when McTernan’s cut back found him in space seven yards from goal but his shot was too close to keeper Scott Johnstone who reacted well to turn the ball behind for a corner kick.

The keeper then made another good save with his feet to deny Calum Gow who had made a rare foray forward from the heart of the Medda defence.

The home side’s perseverance eventually paid off however and it proved to be a double blow for the visitors.

Keenan and Sharpe clashed in an aerial challenge on the edge of the box and McTernan was alert enough to pick up the loose ball and slip a shot past Johnstone. The celebrations were still in full flow when referee Chris Gentles flashed a straight red card at Keenan for foul and abusive language directed at a rival player.

Troon saw out the rest of the half well with 10-men and Ben Reilly was unlucky not to net an equaliser in stoppage time when he burst through on goal only for keeper Paddy O’Neill to make a good block at his near post.

The Seasiders continued where they left off after the break but they were caught on the counter in 54 minutes, McTernan lashing a shot high into the net after a Willet effort was blocked by Jack Sherrie’s desperate lunge.

It looked like game over for the visitors but when substitute John Gemmell headed home a corner kick seven minutes later, Troon were given a new lease of life.

Only a fantastic save from O’Neil prevented Dean Fulton bagging an equaliser on the counter attack.

Meadow were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Ryan Stevenson sent Shape tumbling in the box – a tackle the referee deemed worthy of a penalty award and yellow cars  – and McLennan sent Johnstone the wrong way from the spot.
