Irvine man jailed for assaults on two women told to be “thoroughly ashamed”

An Irvine man jailed for assaulting two women has been told he ought to be “thoroughly ashamed” after he failed to show any remorse for his actions.

Michael Beattie repeatedly punched his partner on the head and body to her injury in June and also assaulted her daughter by punching her and striking her on the head with a metal pot in a separate attack in March.

The assaults, to which Beattie pleaded guilty, took place at an address in Carron Place, Irvine.

Beattie, who appeared in the dock from custody, previously pleaded guilty and appeared before Kilmarnock Sheriff Court to be sentenced where Sheriff Alastair Watson imposed a jail term upon him.

The case had been adjourned for social work reports to be prepared, however, Beattie’s lawyer was forced to explain to the court why the 47-year-old had indicated in the report that he denied the charges.

His defending agent told the court: “He accepts that he pled guilty to all charges before trial.

“The difficulty is with regards to the social work report where he appears to indicate that he denies the offences.

“He does not have much recollection of the appointment due to mental health and he offers that as a means of explanation for denying the offence.”

Beattie was described as having a record of domestic offending - having previously been handed a jail sentence for abuse against the same partner in 2017.

His defending agent added: “It’s not the best of records and he accepts that himself. He would gladly embrace a community-based disposal.”

However, Sheriff Watson refused the bid for an alternative to custody and told Beattie: “This was a disgraceful course of conduct with occasions on different dates with more than one victim.

“The effect on victims of domestic or family abuse should not be under estimated.

“You ought to be thoroughly ashamed yet in the social work report there is no remorse on your part.”

Beattie was sentenced to a total of 28 months in prison.
