Irvine man in dock after driving while almost six times over the limit

An Irvine man who drove with almost six times the legal limit of alcohol in his system has appeared in court.

Matthew Lamont was stopped on Stevenston Road, Kilwinning by police who found him smelling of alcohol with his speech slurred.

Lamont, 43, appeared before Kilmarnock Sheriff Court from custody on Monday where he admitted the offence.

Prosecutor Craig Wainwright told the court how police on patrol spotted Lamont, of Old Caley Road in Irvine, driving a Nissan car.

They had cause to stop him on Stevenston Road “due to the manner of his driving.”

Mr Wainwright continued: “The accused was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.

“Officers could smell a strong sense of alcohol coming from the accused and his speech was slurred.

“A roadside breath test was administered which he failed and was taken to Saltcoats police office.”

At the station, a more formal test was carried out which revealed Lamont had 125 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 22mcg.

Lamont was cautioned and charged with the offence and his reply was “guilty”.

His defending agent said: “He is aware he will be disqualified from driving.”

Sheriff Michael Hanlon said: “I’m going to see what alternatives are available to custody.”

Lamont will be sentenced next month.
