Irvine beach toilets vandalised just weeks after makeover

Irvine’s beach toilets have been hit by a fresh wave of vandalism, just weeks after being given a makeover.

The facility, which is run by the Coastwatch charity, was flooded on Monday and further damage found in the ladies’ room.

Volunteers had to close the shorefront pavillion which is expected to re-open on Wednesday.

The attacks come just weeks after local businesses chipped in with donations of paint to give the toilet block a fresh look.

Coastwatch have suffered at the hands of vandals and thieves since they took charge of the toilets in 2017

And Catherine McCormack, the volunteer who found the latest trail of destruction, admits it is a constant frustration for her colleagues.

She said: “It’s just so needless. The toilets are there for the benefit of the community and this kind of behaviour makes you think is it’s all worth it?.

“The flooding was caused by a ridiculous amount of toilet paper stuffed down toilets in the gents and ladies.

“It was a very deliberate attempt to flood the place. A toilet seat was also snapped in the ladies.

“I just don’t understand why anyone would want to do this. We’re trying to keep a service to the community going and the last thing we need is having to keep closing the toilets.”

Coastwatch also said some beach users are also abusing the facility by using it as a changing room.

Catherine added: “We’ve had instances when the beach is busy and people can’t use the toilets because people are in there getting changed.

“We’ve had a good few items
dumped and left behind, which is again left to the volunteers to tidy
up.

“Just the other day I found a pile of clothes and a brand new pair of trainers in the gents’ cubicle. It’s baffling.”
