Irvine beach car park to be closed for a day to allow work to take place on sand dune

Irvine’s beach front car park will be closed from 9am to 3.30pm on Monday, September 9, to allow for the partial removal of a sand dune.

The naturally occuring dune is currently restricting the view of vehicles entering the car park for those crossing the road there, as well as covering the lowered kerbs which provide wheelchair accessibility.

The removal of a section of the dune will restore a clear line of sight for pedestrians and reinstate the lowered kerbs.

Sand dunes are an incredibly valuable element of our coastline, providing protection to inland areas from coastal weathering as well as valuable habitat for our seaside flora and fauna.

However, sand dunes are also susceptible to erosion, which can then rapidly spread and cause further loss to the dunes.

Material removed from the dune will be relocated to help fill an eroded area further along the beach.

It is anticipated that by depositing the sand and its associated grasses that it will help to slow down and stabilise the sand dune, preventing further damage from taking place in future.
