Irresponsible dog owners and litterbugs slapped with fines totalling over £16,000

Litterbugs and irresponsible dog owners have been fined a total of more than £16,000 across North Somerset. 39 people have been prosecuted during the council crackdown against those who breach Public Space Protection Orders.

The fines ranged from £156 to £508 depending on means and whether a guilty plea was entered. Each offender was given a fixed penalty notice of £75 and sent at least one reminder letter but failed to pay.

The charges included 34 for littering by dropping a cigarette, three for walking a dog off lead in an area where dogs must be on leads, and two for having a dog in an exclusion zone. The prosecutions were heard at North Somerset Magistrates Court on Friday, March 17, Friday, April 14 and Friday, May 12.

The following three people were found guilty of walking a dog off lead in an area where dogs must be on leads:

  • Kevin Lewis of Turtlegate Avenue, Bristol
  • Emily Maya of Sussex Place, Plymouth
  • John Thatcher of Glebe Road, Weston-super-Mare.

The following two people were found guilty of having a dog in an exclusion zone:

  • Anna Jane of George Street, Weston-super-Mare
  • Leigh Rogers of Wilton Crescent, Weston-super-Mare.

The 34 people found guilty of littering by dropping a cigarette were:

  • Corine Bear of Stanley Road, Weston-super-Mare
  • Sean Beeton of Hazeldene Road, Weston-super-Mare
  • Richard Harper of Bellamy Avenue, Bristol
  • Jade Harvey of Milton Road, Weston-super-Mare

  • Jamie Kay of Station Road, Weston-super-Mare
  • Fiaz Mahmood of Apple Close, Blackburn
  • Sam Palmer of Kipling Road, Weston-super-Mare
  • Amanda Perkin of Leslie Green Court, Newport
  • Jake Powell of Lansdowne Grove Lodge, Bath
  • Steven Powell of St Catherines Road, Evesham
  • Lukasz Prokopik of Ringwood Grove, Weston-super-Mare
  • Andrew Radford of Baildon Crescent, Weston-super-Mare
  • Agna Riabaite of Dunster Crescent, Weston-super-Mare
  • Abby Robinson of Sunnyside Road, Weston-super-Mare

Councillor James Clayton, North Somerset Council's Executive Member for Safety in the community, said: “Robust enforcement of the PSPOs is a key part of the action we are taking to clean up our local area for everyone to enjoy and make North Somerset a greener place to be. We hope our partnership with Local Authority Support and enforcement of the PSPOs will lead to a reduction of overall offending.

“It’s disappointing to see so many offenders from Weston-super-Mare and I hope that this changes. We’ll continue to heavily publicise our PSPOs, and previous convictions. There really is no excuse."
