'Irreplaceable' mum killed while on a walk during maternity leave

A young mum was killed while enjoying a walk during maternity leave, leaving her family and friends heartbroken.

Lauren Johnson was 33 when she was hit by a Toyota Auris that had mounted the pavement at speed in October 2016 on College Road, Crosby.

The inquest into Lauren's death was held at Bootle Town Hall and heard how the mum was a pedestrian on October 28 when car, driven by George Steele, aged 72 at the time, hit her.

Liverpool's Coroner's Court heard how she died from head and neck injuries after being hit by the speeding car.

The coroner found that Lauren, who worked as head of compliance assurance, died on October, 28 at University Hospital Aintree as a result of 'sustaining un-survivable injuries' earlier that day when, 'as a pedestrian on a pavement, she was struck by a motor car travelling at speed'.

Mr Lewis concluded the cause of death was due to a road traffic collision.

The coroner's report also found that the driver of the car was "not in control of his mental and physical actions, owing to an unanticipated medical episode of sudden onset that had begun less than a minute earlier".

At the hearing on Wednesday, November 3, Jacqueline Steele - who was a passenger at the time of the incident - said the car "suddenly started speeding up" and the first time they heard about Lauren being hit was "when they turned on the TV that night".

Concerns were raised over whether Mr Steele had suffered a medical episode of some kind as his mannerisms suggested he was ‘confused and disoriented’.

In a statement on behalf of Lauren's family, mum Mrs McGurgan said: "That day will live with our families forever."

She went on to say that Lauren had a ‘loving husband and two beautiful children’ and was off ‘enjoying her maternity when she was killed’.

The hearing heard how the incident has had an ‘immeasurable effect on their lives’ and Lauren, who was a ‘beautiful and caring’ woman, can ‘never be replaced’.

Mrs McGurgan said: “We have lost our beautiful daughter, our only daughter, our eldest child, our friend.”
