Iron Throne statue coming to London's Leicester Square as Game of Thrones marks 10th anniversary

A statue of the Iron Throne is set to be unveiled in London's Leicester Square this summer as Game of Thrones marks the 10th anniversary since it first aired.

It will be the latest artwork to join the 'Scenes in the Square' sculpture trail alongside Harry Potter, Paddington, Mr Bean, Mary Poppins, Batman, Wonder Woman, Gene Kelly, Bugs Bunny and Laurel & Hardy.

Westminister Council has granted permission for the trail to remain in place until at least July 2023.

The first episode of Game of Thrones was broadcast on HBO on 17 April 2011.

The Iron Throne of Westeros was at the heart of the programme, representing the central authority the characters were fighting to claim.

Game of Thrones ran for eight series and accumulated more than 50 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Iron Throne will join nine other statues, including one of Harry Potter playing Quidditch (PA)

An upcoming prequel series, House of the Dragon, is due to air in 2022.

The drama will focus on the story of the Targaryen family 300 years before the events of the previous HBO series.

It will be based on the George R R Martin novel Fire & Blood.

Director of Destination Marketing for Heart of London, Mark Williams, said: “The trail is a true celebration of entertainment, paying tribute to film, theatre and now television.

"We’re excited to be able to honour the legacy of one of the world’s most popular TV shows of all time as part of our Scenes in the Square trail.

"Thanks to Westminster City Council for their continued support; we’re looking forward to welcoming people back into the Heart of London this Summer and encourage fans to come down and see the Iron Throne in all its glory, alongside the additional statues in the square.”

WarnerMedia Country Manager for UK and Ireland, Polly Cochrane, said: “We are delighted that the Iron Throne will be joining the most iconic characters and actors in entertainment as part of the Scenes in the Square Leicester Square trail.

"Game of Thrones has been enthralling fans for 10 years and we are excited to continue to share its legacy with everyone as we look forward to the next chapter in the franchise.”
